Thesis Submission Deadline, September Grads: August 16 (One month from today!)

Dear Students:

Please be reminded that those of you who intend to graduate this coming September will need to submit your completed and approved Master's thesis to Draper no later than one month from today: Monday, August 16th. Any theses received after 6:00 PM on August 16th will be held over for January graduation. There will be no exceptions.

David Ferris has launched a new blog called "Humble Piety: Meditations on the Politics of Limited Knowledge." About this project, David writes,

Ranging widely in topical content, Ferris ponders knowledge and belief in the public sphere. Often approaching feature-length articles in a style inhabiting the interregnum between academic and pop-political, the long-form posts may be unwieldy for the blogosphere but hopefully justify their verbosity. They should appeal to a wide range of Draper students. Participation through comments is highly encouraged and diversity of perspective deeply valued. Ask a question. Throw out a challenge to think in new light. Share your experience and erudition."

Salvador Olguin presented his paper "Towards a Genealogy of the Posthuman Subject: Traces of a Prosthetic Impulse in Philosophical Materialism During the Enlightenment and in Gnostic Theology" at The University of Surrey's interdisciplinary conference on "The Emergence of the Posthuman Subject." Salvador has also published an article called "Giorgio Agamben: Posthumanism and Bare Life" in Interfolia, a magazine published by the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

Schedule Your Fall 2010 Advisement Appointment Next Monday, July 12

Please be reminded that we will start scheduling appointments for fall 2010 academic advisement next Monday, July 12. Draper's advisement period runs from Monday, August 16 through Thursday, September 2. In person appointments are preferable, but phone appointments can be scheduled for students who will not be in New York on the day of their scheduled meeting.

All students who are registering for credits *must* have an advising appointment.

Dani Limos has a new job working with Peace First, an organization whose goal is to integrate social-emotional learning into the schools' curriculum and culture. Dani will be working as a Peace First Americorps Member for 10 months, going into schools in NYC and teaching kids the skills of conflict resolution and civic engagement through games and community service projects. In the fall, she'll be leading weekly experiential activities, and in the spring, she'll be helping each classroom create and implement community service learning projects to apply their learned skills in a community context.

Faith Merino-Davies will be presenting a paper entitled "Grotesque: Writing, Naming, and Disfiguring Women's Bodies in and Wide Sargasso Sea and Myal"at the "Hybrids, Monsters, Aliens, and Other Creatures in 20th and 21st Century Writing" Conference at the University of London's Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies this September.

April Pierce has had papers accepted at three upcoming conferences. In August, she'll be presenting a paper entitled "Representation, Concealment, and Techne: 21st Century Reimaginings of Heidegger's Work" at the International Society for Hermeneutics and Science's annual conference in Vienna. The paper examines artificial intelligence, avatars, and bioengineering from a Heideggerian perspective.

In September, she'll be presenting her paper "Where Does the Poem Go?" at the “Cosmopoetics: Mediating a New World Poetics”conference at St. John’sCollege, Durham University. The paper is an experimental essay which seeks to uncover the poetic audience: their motivations, their modes of listening, and their philosophy.

April and Seth Taylor Garrison will be co-presenting "The Metaphorical Horizon: Between Facts and Fiction," at the 5th International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences in Cambridge, UK. April and Seth's proposal can be read on the conference website.
