GSAS New Student Spring 2012 Orientation

The Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) is pleased to invite you to the Spring 2012 New Student Orientation and let you know about the variety of electronic resources that will help ease your transition to graduate school.

We will hold the 2012 GSAS Spring Orientation on Friday, January 27, 2012, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm on campus. The New Student Orientation is designed to introduce you to the Graduate School of Arts and Science and offer information on University based resources and services. Registration will open at 5 pm so we will be able to begin our program at 5:30 sharp. The orientation provides an opportunity to meet other newly admitted students as well as current graduate students. A wine and cheese reception will immediately follow.

GSAS Fall 2011 New Student Orientation Series

The Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) is pleased to announce its preliminary Orientation offerings for the Fall 2011 semester. The GSAS Orientation Series consists of two main components, stand alone individualized sessions and a generalized “Core” Orientation. This series is meant to supplement the specific guidance provided by academic departments and administrative offices.

The Fall New Student Orientation Series is designed to offer new students a range of informational programs that are tailored to match the interests of the diverse students admitted to GSAS each year. Although attendance for the Orientation Series is not mandatory, students are strongly encouraged to attend.

Registration for the Orientation Series will begin on Monday, August 22, 2011. Please bookmark this site and check back for important updates, including event location information, at that time.

Students are encouraged to join us for a networking lunch for domestic students of color. Students will have the opportunity to meet new and advanced graduate students of color and hear advice from faculty and administrators on strategies on how to make a smooth transition to graduate school.

Financial Aid, Bill Payment and Registration Workshop

Ph.D. Application Workshop

This workshop is a mini-orientation session geared towards students who are either considering a Ph.D. or those who are already in the early stages of the application process. It is also relevant to students who are interested in general information regarding doctoral degrees and those who need some guidance as to what they should be prepared for in terms of the application process. Some general issues that will be tackled are:

• How do I know if a PhD is right for me?
• Setting realistic expectations of the PhD process and future career trajectories.
• Choosing a department as well as a university that is a good fit for me. -What to expect in terms of the contents and deadlines for a PhD application.
• Using Draper as a resource for making decisions about a PhD and a career in academia.

We encourage all Draper students who are interested in future doctoral studies and have questions regarding the same to attend this workshop.

Save the Date! GSAS New Student Orientation: 9/11/09

GSAS will be holding an all-day orientation for new students on Friday, September 11, 2009. Program events will include a keynote address from GSAS Dean Catharine Stimpson, a 'Meet and Greet' lunch, networking Happy Hour, and various information sessions which may be of interest to Draper students. This year, the event will feature an information session designed especially for Master's students in the Humanities and Social Sciences who are making the transition to graduate school ("What I wish I knew..." see below).

Students do not need to attend the orientation for the whole day, but online registration is required and will be available starting August 17, 2009. NYU Libraries hold collections totaling more than 4 million volumes, almost 5 million microforms, 500,000 government documents, 80,000 sound and video recordings and a wide range of electronic resources. Subject area specialist librarians will provide a detailed overview of the available resources to get you started and discuss best research practices.


Graduate School Transition Seminars, “What I Wish I knew …”
Targeted sessions for doctoral and master’s candidates in the humanities, social sciences and sciences.

Whether you are a recent grad, were part of the work force, or are still working, graduate school presents new challenges. What are you likely to face as you begin your graduate school career? How can you thrive in this new environment? Graduate students and representatives from the GSAS Office of Graduate Enrollment Services will speak to a range of transitional issues and tell you about the resources available to ease your transition. Panelists will provide useful tips and strategies based on what they have learned through teaching, mentoring and graduate study at the Graduate School of Arts and Science.
