IMPORTANT: April 1 Deadline for Lapsed Incomplete Grades

Dear Students:

The GSAS Dean's Office has announced their intention to begin strictly enforcing policies regarding incomplete grades. After April 1, 2012, grade changes will not be permitted for any incomplete that has extended beyond one academic year without an approved extension and/or has lapsed to an F.

Until that date, the Dean's office is allowing students to rectify current Incompletes that should have expired or have already lapsed to an F. If you currently have an unresolved Incomplete or F on your transcript from a course that you took an incomplete in, please contact Draper as soon as possible to discuss how best to handle your situation. In some cases, extensions of incompletes may be possible. 

Going forward, please remember that GSAS policy states that students who take an incomplete in a course have one year from the *beginning* of the semester in which the course was taken to complete the work and receive a final grade. If the course work is not completed within this time, and the student has not been granted an extension, the 'I' will turn into an 'F.' 

Extensions for incomplete grades are often granted--please be sure to contact Draper if you think that you'll need even a short amount of extra time to complete outstanding coursework.

Notice about summer class schedule and registration

Dear Draperites,

While we know that the search function in Albert now includes summer courses, we want you to be clear that most departments do not have their full course schedules set yet, including Draper.

We will send an announcement to this listserv when our schedule is up, closer to February 13. The last day to register for the Summer Session I is not until May 20, so you have plenty of time to consider your summer course choices.

Draper does not have an official advisement period for summer classes. After February 13, if you want to enroll in summer courses, please email draper.program@nyu.edu for approval.

Happy Thanksgiving!

NYU offices (including Draper) will close at 4:00 PM today in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The office will remain closed on Thursday and Friday, but we'll be back open during regular business hours on Monday, November 28.

If you have not already made your advisement appointment for spring 2012 classes, please call Draper (212.998.8070) to set up an appointment. Appointments can be held in person or over the phone, but all students who will be enrolling in courses during the coming semester *must* speak to Dr. Dimit for advising.

Next week will be the last week of advising until January--there will be no advising appointments made in December.

Appointments are still available on Monday, Nov. 21 and Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Please be reminded that those of you who intend to graduate this coming January will need to submit your completed and approved Master's thesis to Draper no later than one month from today: Friday, December 16. Any theses received after 6:00 PM on December 16 will be held over for May graduation. There will be no exceptions.

Draper's Preliminary Spring 2012 Courses Available

Spring course listings for the whole graduate school should be available on Albert within the next week or so. Please note that Draper's website listings are still rather minimal, but we'll have more crosslists and descriptions available prior to the start of advising in November.

No NYU Classes on Mon/Tue Next Week, But Draper Will Still Be Open!

Dear students:

This is just a reminder that there are no classes scheduled for Monday, October 10 and Tuesday, October 11. With limited exceptions, NYU offices--including Draper--will remain open on both days.

All university holidays are listed on the online academic calendar. This fall's vacations are all listed here.

Draper's New Winter Session Course: Issues in Public Art

For the first time ever, Draper students can take a course during the three weeks of winter session, which runs from January 3 - 21. Mario A. Caro, Professor of Art Worlds, will teach “Issues in Public Art” (a more detailed description of the class is below).

The winter session class structure allows an intense immersion into the kinds of themes and considerations that normally stretch across a full semester. It’s also an opportunity for you to start and finish a four-credit course in a compressed time frame. Such a schedule, while demanding, might be especially appealing to those of you who want to graduate within a tightly defined time frame.

Because this is a new initiative, and because Draper is the only program within the Graduate School to offer a winter session class in this academic year, it is important for us to determine the level of student interest. Topics in Art Worlds: Issues in Public Art

This course will explore contemporary issues that affect the production and consumption of public art. Claims for this art can range from this genre being perceived as government or corporate propaganda to it being seen as an egalitarian possibility for the voice of the people to be heard. We will survey current local, national, and international efforts to produce public art that is diaologic, art that furthers dialogue among communities. We will also look at the history of public art in order to gain an appreciation for its present state. Because much of the contemporary work emphasizes the performative aspects of dialogue, works may not always be recognizable as art. The ultimate challenge for us will be in being able to recognize public art when we confront it.

Reduced Hours and Staffing at Draper, Monday, August 29

Dear Students:

Although NYU expects that campus offices will be open on Monday, August 29th, we anticipate that at the very least, Draper will have reduced hours and staffing tomorrow. If you have business or concerns that can be delayed until later in the week, we ask that you wait to come to the office to handle these matters until we are back to a normal schedule. Information on Fall Advising and Registration

Dear Students:

As many of you are aware, Draper will begin taking appointments for fall 2011 academic advising this coming Monday, July 25. Appointments can be scheduled by calling Draper's main line at 212.998.8070. To be fair to all of our students, we cannot schedule advising appointments via email.

The following information should be useful to you as you prepare for advisement and registration:

• Advising will run from Monday, August 15 - Thursday, September 1.
  
  
• Remember that all students who are taking credit-bearing courses *must* have an advising appointment before they will be given access codes. Students who will not be taking classes but will be completing their theses in the fall should register for Maintenance of Matriculation (MM) with Class Number 1631. For more information on what MM is and why you need to register for it, please see Draper's FAQ page for current students here.
  
  
• If you cannot attend your advisement appointment in person, you can schedule a phone appointment. New students are encouraged to come in for advising in person, if at all possible.
  
  
• Draper's fall course listings are available on our website (http://draper.as.nyu.edu/object/drap.courses.fa11). Please note that these listings are currently more accurate than those found through Albert, but that due to the new registration system, some details--particularly for crosslisted courses--are still being finalized. Course information will be complete by the time advisement begins.
  

Contacts for Prospective Students

Dear Students-

Throughout the year, applicants to Draper request to be put in touch with current students who would be willing to answer questions about faculty, courses, and their overall experience in the program. In such cases, we generally email the questions to current students, who then respond directly to the applicant.

If you would be willing to answer questions for prospective students from time to time, please email us (draper.program(at)nyu.edu) with your preferred email address and your primary research interests. (We try to match applicants with students who have similar academic interests.) We will always ask your permission before sending you questions to answer, and you will, of course, never be obligated to respond to such inquiries. We know that the academic year is very busy, and that you may not always have time to speak to prospective students.

Access to Health Center Over the Summer

Dear students:

If you are not currently enrolled in fall classes in other departments but need access to NYU's Student Health Center over the summer, please contact Draper prior to your medical appointment. Several Draper students have been asked to provide letters from our program confirming that they are still enrolled, as services at the Center are restricted to active NYU students. Since Draper's advising/registration period falls later than that of many other departments in GSAS, the Health Center simply needs confirmation that you're still working toward your degree. But once you have a signed letter from Draper confirming that you are a current student, you won't have any trouble accessing services at the health center.

Current Students Needed for Upcoming Open House: 6/16

Each summer, Draper hosts Open Houses for prospective students and applicants. These are densely-attended events at which we explain the program and our degree to prospective students. Draper's administration and faculty can provide a great deal of information about the program, but many prospectives are also eager to speak directly with current students.

We'll host our second Open House on Thursday, June 16 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. It's our hope to have current students on hand to speak to Open House attendees before and after the formal presentation, which will start at 6:15 and last about 45 minutes. If you would be free to join us, it would be a great help to us and the prospective students. You would just be asked to field basic questions about your experience at Draper and NYU--typically, applicants want to know about class size, interactions with professors, social/scholarly involvement in the Draper community, etc. We'll be happy to offer gift certificates to the NYU bookstore for those who are able to attend.

Reminder: Theses for May Graduates due April 18

Dear Students-

This is just a friendly reminder that the thesis submission deadline for all Draperites planning to graduate this May is Monday, April 18th at 6:00 PM. Students must submit their completed and approved theses--along with the necessary paperwork--no later than this date; theses submitted late will be held for August 2011 graduation. No exceptions are made to this rule, and students who do not meet this deadline will not be eligible to walk in either the GSAS convocation or all-university commencement ceremonies.

Students planning to graduate in August should submit their Thesis Topic Approval Form by April 18th as well.

Thesis paperwork (including reader's sheets, the Draper Exit Questionnaire, and a sample cover page) can be found on Draper's 'Forms' page.
